Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)
Element A - Eyesight

Before the CBT course can start you will be given an eyesight test. You must be able to read a number plate
  • In good daylight
  • Containing letters and figures 79.4 mm ( 3.1 in. ) high
  • At a distance of 20.5 metres (about 67 feet)
  • With the aid of glasses or contact lenses if you normally wear them

If you fail the eyesight test the course will not continue.
Before you can do any practical training your instructor will talk to you about
  • The legal requirements
  • The aims of the CBT course
  • The importance of the right equipment and clothing

In Element A your trainer will check that you have all the legal requirements such as a driving licence, a roadworthy bike and suitable helmet. Scotti Knights will provide this equipment if required.
Element B - The Controls of the Motorcycle

The instructor will explain the workings of the motorcycle in a demonstration which will last about 45 minutes.
  • Control positions overview - foot controls
  • Left handlebar controls
  • Right handlebar controls
  • Instrument panel
  • Basic machine checks - the stand - wheeling - braking - starting and stopping the engine

Element D - Classroom Session

Element D is a classroom session about the dangers of riding on the road. This element must be completed satisfactorily before any road riding is undertaken. At the end of the session you should understand the need to
  • Recognize the importance of reading and understanding the Highway Code
  • Ride defensively and anticipate the actions of other road users
  • Use rear observation at appropriate times
  • Assume the correct road position whilst riding
  • Leave sufficient space when following another vehicle
  • Pay due regard to the effects of varying weather conditions when riding
  • Be aware of the effect on a vehicle of the various types of road surface
  • Be aware of the need to be clearly visibleto other road users (the use of conspicuity aids)
  • Recognise the legal for riding on the road
  • Understand why motorcyclists aremore vunerable than most road users
  • Drive at the correct speed according to road and traffic conditions
  • Be aware of the consequences of aggressive attitudes when riding
  • Be aware of the importance of hazzard perception
  • Be aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol use

All learner motorcyclists and moped riders must satisfactorily complete CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) before riding on the road.
The CBT course covers 5 elements A- E, which must to be taken in sequence. The whole course takes between 6 and 8 hours but can be spread over 2 or more days if preferred.
The CBT training courses are run by 'Approved Training Bodies' (ATBs) who have instructors who are DSA (Driving Standards Agency ) acredited. Scotti Knights Instructors are all DSA acredited.
When you've successfully completed all 5 elements you'll be issued with a Certificate of Completion of training (DL196) which enables you to ride on the road on a learner legal motorcycle.
CBT certificates are valid for two years, if after that time you still wish to ride as a learner, you will need to retake your CBT (every 2 years). However, most people should aim to pass the full motorcycle test even if they don't want to ride a bigger motorycle. Insurance is typically cheaper for a start and you wont need to keep retaking CBT every two years.

Once you have completed your CBT training successfully, you can apply for the DSA motorcycle theory test and, if you pass that, go on to take the DSA practical test.
After CBT there are other training schemes to prepare for the theory and practical tests.
Element C - Riding The Motorcycle

The instructor will take you through the process of riding the motorcycle in an exercise that lasts between 2 and 3 hours.
  • Riding - clutch control - gear changing
  • Braking
  • Indicating and maneuvering - rear observation - the OSM/PSL routine
  • Moving off and stopping at the kerb - turning right and left - junctions - U-turns

Element E - On Road Riding
This section is carried out on road, with a maximum of one other student, to practice everything you have learnt over the past few hours.
You will have to demonstrate that you can ride competently and safely in a variety of road and traffic conditions.
Your training will cover how to cope with a range of hazards and include as many of the following as possible
  • Traffic Lights
  • Roundabouts
  • Junctions
  • Pedestrian Crossings
  • Gradients
  • Obstructions
  • Bends
You must repeat the following exercises (originally practised during element C) but this time in on-road conditions
  • Perform a U Turn
  • Manoeuvre satisfactorily
  • Bring the machine to a stop under full control as in an emergency
At the end of this session you will be assessed.
If you have performed adequately and if you show that you recognise your mistakes and that you are aware of the need to continue practising on your own then you will be given the certificate of completion (DL196).
The CBT certificate validates your provisional licence and must be kept with it and produced when required and at your driving test. It is valid for 2 years. If you lose it your training centre will be able to provide you with a duplicate.
You should also note that CBT does not train a rider to practical test standard, and that in the Department of Transport's view, further training is advisable.
Atthis point your Scotti Knights instructor will discuss further training requirements to prepare you for your future tests.
